What am I doing with my Proteak cutting board?

Chopping Green Onions! Chopped up for a night of mashed potatoes and chicken.  Featured under these greens (and in Cooks Illustrated as the last cutting board you’ll ever need!) is a Edge Grain cutting board.

Serving Drinks for Two! This lovely End Grain serving cheeseboard can display more than just cheese!  I used it the other day to share a drink with a friend.  (Ceramic sake cups were made by Jake Johnson.)

Salt-and-Peppering! I am a pepper fanatic, one of these grinders I found at the Chopping Block in Chicago, the other I found at an estate sale, can you tell which is which?  Neither can I most of the time (especially since I have Hawaiian black salt in one, and black pepper in the other).  The beauty of a Proteak Edge Grain cutting board is that it can come in many different shapes and sizes.  While I prefer the large rectangle, you may prefer an octagonal edge grain, or even a circular edge grain.

Chopping Cabbage! I wouldn’t call myself a cabbage chopping expert, but this recipe turned out pretty good.  I sauteed the red cabbage in butter, balsamic vinegar and a pinch of sugar.  I have found that if you oil up your cutting board frequently, any picture you take of it turns you into a master chef.

Thanks for stopping by, stay tuned for our first official installment of “What are you chopping?”

Teak here, there, and everywhere!

Teak is getting more and more popular! Just last night I was watching a recent episode of Modern Family on Hulu and they mentioned teak!  A few weeks ago Family Guy also cracked a teak joke.  Why is everyone jumping on the teak wagon?  Because teak is a strong, durable hardwood that is aesthetically gorgeous in any application.  The natural oil produced by teak wood keeps away rot, mold, insects, and pesky neighbors.  Take a look at this new teak facade on the Mercer building made from Proteak lumber:

*this is just a sneak preview, I should  be getting more pictures soon.

Our newest partners Eco Supply in Richmond VA have a beautiful website displaying their work. ” ECO Supply is an East Coast distributor of green building materials, representing a merger between Richmond, Va.-based ECO Supply Center and Brooklyn-based Bettencourt Green Building Supplies.”  Click on their name above to go directly to the Eco Supply website or click here to get directly to their gallery page.  If you are on the east coast give them a call for your next teak building project!

Valentines day is almost upon us.  Check out our teak cuttingboards and cutting board gift sets for the perfect gift for him or her this valentines day.

And as always, call us with any questions!  We can be reached at 512-847-6024 or info@proteak.com

Proteak’s Cutting Boards come out on top!

Cook’s Illustrated Names Proteak Boards
“The Last Cutting Board You Will Ever Need!”

“Cook’s Illustrated” Test Kitchen says that the ONLY board
they can highly recommend is “Proteak”.

Cook’s Illustrated tested 9 cutting boards by evaluating their User-Friendliness,
Cutting, Durability and wear on a Chef’s knife.  Proteak was the only board to receive the highest rating in every category!
Consumers have come to realize that Teak wood’s exceptional beauty and durability make it an ideal material for kitchen use.  Due to its highly resilient characteristics, Teak is often used in kitchen applications like cutting boards, countertops, and especially in outdoor kitchens.
Equipped with a naturally high level of oily resins called tectoquinones, teak wood has the unique ability to repel rot, fungi, warping and moisture.  Every one of our cutting boards are handmade making each board completely unique.  We offer numerous sizes and styles to fit all of your kitchen needs.

What are my decking options?

It’s decking season!  Time to get out there and enjoy your beautiful deck…oh wait you need a deck!  Don’t worry, you are at the right place.  There are many options when it come to great decking.

Now when you are talking about exotic decking most people first think Ipe.

1.  Ipe – or Brazilian Walnut is one of the most common decks in the US right now.  It’s hard, it’s sturdy, it’s got a class A fire rating, and of course it’s beautiful.  It became famous after the Port of  Yokohama in Japan installed this famous Ipe deck.  It really got a lot of attention and you can see why …it’s BIG!

Now after all of this popularity and use, you can imagine it’s getting harder to find and more expensive.  Ipe comes out of Brazil, and due to the demand there is less of it today than there was 10 years ago.  Ipe unfortunately doesn’t grow well on plantations so almost 100% of the Ipe today comes from deforestation. There are many responsible Ipe importers (some of them we call our close friends) …so no Ipe bashing here, just telling the truth about the future.  So, what else is out there you say?

Teak, of course.  Teak has long been one of the most famous woods used in ship building for  centuries.  It’s dark golden color, and resistance to the elements make it the holy grail of woods.  However, it’s been hard to find and very expensive, that is until people realized you can grow teak in Mexico and Central America.  (it’s indigenous to a few countries in SE Asia)  Since it was expensive and difficult to find it fell out of general favor with the public for residential and commercial decking applications.  But you know what, it’s back!

Proteak Renewable Forestry now has over 16,000 acres of teak plantations under cultivation, and growing every day.  The difference between Ipe and Teak is that Teak DOES grow well on plantations making it THE Wood of the future.  Teak also has those great qualities that you are looking for in decking from great aesthetics, to a hardiness that is unmatched among hardwoods.  For specifics on teak you can look here:  http://www.proteak.com/plantation-teak/
