Tropical Hardwoods have been traditionally sourced from natural forests, without any sustainable forestry standards. This has contributed greatly to deforestation and loss of biodiversity, making it impossible to sustain in the long run.
Today, quality plantation teak is substituting many of the tropical hardwoods extracted from natural forests, as its characteristics and efficient growth allow both for sustainable supply and comparable quality.
By 2025, it is estimated that 50% of tropical hardwoods will come from plantations. Thus, Proteak seeks to set the standard in the supply of high quality, sustainable teak.
We source from our own plantations, which currently range from 1 to 25 years of age and cover close to 8,000 hectares in 3 countries in Latin America.
Each and every one of our teak logs are marked with a bar code that allows for perfect traceability. We currently export from 3 different countries into more than 15 ports around the world, focusing mainly in Asia. We also work directly with factories in countries like Vietnam, China and India to provide a long term sourcing solution for them and expand the uses of our timber.
Our experience has allowed for us to develop our own standard for sustainable practices, making our logistics more efficient and offering our customers reliability in the wood’s measurement and quality through full control of the chain of custody.
We currently offer two different wood qualities related to the year in which our timber is harvested. All of our teak is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC).
