New 321 Teak Wood Cutting Board by Proteak!

Proteak Presents………
The 321 End Grain Chopping Block

This 321 Rectangle End Grain chopping block is the newest in our End Grain collection. The thick and durable end grain construction is gentle on  knife blades while its smaller size allows end grain chopping blocks to be featured in smaller cooking spaces. Outfitted with a practical hand grip, the beauty and utility of Proteak’s end grain cutting boards will make this a fixture on your kitchen island for years to come. See this board in use on our Facebook page.
Last night while out in the garden, I thought I’d give this board a test run.  Earlier in the day on the Proteak Facebook page I saw blog post with a simple way to infuse herbs in olive oil.  Being a soapmaker by night, I always have lots of organic olive oil on hand so I thought Id give it a try. This past week in Texas we have gotten a good amount of rain, so my herb garden was up to the challenge!  Here is what I gathered.  You’ll see some fennel, thai basil, sage, and oregano.
The sage leaves were really dirty from all of the rain, so I rinsed them off, and chopped them up into pieces.  This 321 is the smallest of our end grain collection, making it the perfect size for light chopping jobs such as herbs and salad ingredients.  I like it because I can leave it on the counter for general use and still have lots of room for other activities.
The hand grips on this board in conjunction with its light weight makes this 321 chopping block easily movable while the weight of the thick end grain keeps it from sliding on the counter top.  At first I was afraid that this wood cutting board would be too small to do multiple things at once….. I quickly realized that I could chop on one side with enough room to use the other side for already chopped items.
After chopping up the herbs, I separated them into little piles and filled each of my ice cube lots up half way.
Finally, I poured olive oil over the herbs until they were completely covered and stuck them in the freezer.  What a great way to store summer herbs for winter cooking!  Tonight I will go home and transfer the frozen cubes into zip lock bags.
As one of my goals this year is to lessen food waste in my household, I think that I may switch from my bigger chopping block to this 321.  It will let me chop exactly what I need, no more, no less.  Its also very affordable at $35.99.  Want to try this out yourself?  Check out the original post here, the instructions are a bit more thorough and there is some beautiful food photography.

Try out the 321 yourself!  Find it here.

What are you chopping, Michelle?

About Michelle:  Michelle Starbuck, of Michelle Starbuck Designs, is a jeweler, painter, and all around creative person.  She began her design business in 2005 to meet a need for affordable and unique handmade jewelry. Her focus on organic and geometric design in her work extends to all areas of her life which is why she is drawn to our teak wood cutting boards in the kitchen.   A little known secret of Michelle’s is that she is also a talented chef.  She frequently posts pictures of her farmers market finds, and her culinary creations on her Instigram account (MichelleStarbuckDesigns), lets see what she is chopping this week……

What is Michelle Chopping?

Michelle has our 106 Edge Grain cutting board, yes, the one featured in Cooks Illustrated as “the last cutting board you’ll ever need.”  It is the perfect size for her Chicago style kitchen.

Michelle adds Spinach to all of her home made pizzas, just toss it on for the last 5 minutes for a delicious treat. For salads & other meals that require a lot of chopping, try adding a smaller board to complement the stationary chopping block.   Transporting veggies is quick and easy with our smaller edge grain boards.

A master of left overs, Michelle can turn yesterdays left over chicken into an entirely new meal.  The 106 was designed with the input of chefs, who requested that it be spacious enough to accommodate all of their ingredients.

For dessert, we have another fan of Strawberry short cake.  The difference between mine and hers:  she whipped the cream by hand.

Read more about Michelle and her adventures, culinary and otherwise visit her blog or shop.

Stay tuned….more episodes to come.  Submit your Proteak kitchen adventures to mnovak@proteak.com

Spring Makeover from Proteak

Every spring I get the itch to rearrange, reorganize, and revamp.  Sound familiar?  That’s when you know its time for a spring makeover. Whether it’s emptying my kitchen counters, or replacing them, change feels great! Pictured above is a recently revamped apartment space.  This newly teaked-out apartment includes a teak table top, teak flooring, teak decking, and many other beautiful teak furnishings.  Check out our teak Proteak Flickr account to see many more pictures of this stunning abode.  Below are a few images of some spring building ideas using teak lumber, teak decking, teak kitchen counter tops, teak table tops, and much more. Don’t you want to build your own?  We have plenty of Teak Lumber. The backyard is another area I love to revamp in the springtime. Feeling the warmth of the new sun on your face, watching seedlings push their way out of the rotting ground cover to mark their place, dipping your toe in the river hoping that today will be the day you dare to jump in.  These are just three of the myriad of reasons to find an excuse to be outside. Mine is usually planting.  I have found that our teak planters are very helpful to contain plants that I don’t want spreading all over my limited garden space. They are also great as a display for flowering plants.  The natural oil found in teak protect it from rainfall & watering which leads to rot and decay in most hardwoods. I recently stumbled upon this beautiful urban decking picture:  The way they integrate plants into this urban decking environment is amazing.  There are many ways to create your own unique teak deck at Proteak.  The easiest way is to use our teak decking tiles. These interlocking pieces fit easily into any space and can be rearranged as many times as your mood dictates.  If you have been dreaming of more permanent decking solution, we offer teak decking lumber as well. This decking provides a unique and stunning aesthetic that will last for years and years.

Although I like the labor of change, my favorite part of spring cleaning is…..the end. The clean house.  The rebuilt counter top. The new bookshelf.  The planted garden.  The cool drink with a straw.  The sitting quietly in a comfortable lawn chair.

Pictured above is our Teak Steamer chair, the ideal way to spend a quiet afternoon in your new surroundings.

What are you chopping, Madeline? -Proteak Renewable Forestry

Ill kick off the “What Are You Chopping” series with a few pictures from my own kitchen.

About MeMy name is Madeline, I work at Proteak Renewable Forestry in Wimberley, Texas. As a recent transplant from Chicago, my new position at Proteak has opened my eyes to the world of sustainability and the importance of sound forestry practices.  In my spare time I co-run a natural perfume and soap business called Old Factory Soap Company and am learning to garden.  Though I wouldn’t consider myself a very competent chef (I still need measuring cups), I do enjoy cooking and taking pictures.  Working for Proteak, I can do both together!

This is what I’m Chopping:

In my arsenal of kitchen tools, I have two Proteak cutting boards that I use for all of my chopping. The first: This End Grain Serving Cheeseboard that measures 18 x 7 x 2 from the Elevated collection.  The second:  This Edge Grain Rectangle Caring Board with Hand Grip that measures 20 x 15 x 1.5.  They are both pictured below.

I keep them sitting on top of each other to create a two layeredcutting board so that I can put veggies on the top layer while chopping on the bottom.  When Im not cooking I use the upper level as a display for these small Mary Drabik bud vases.

Stormy Saturday afternoons create the perfect environment for lengthy cooking. I decided to cook up a Savoie family classic, PaPaw’s Dirty Rice. This particular recipe calls for a lot of chopping, as you can see, so I was thankful for my large edge grain cutting board.  The height on the larger board makes it very easy to transfer the chopped veggies into a bowl or pot.  I imagine this board, the Rectangle End Grain with bowl cut out, our 601, would be very helpful as well.

Only needing two cups of each, I dried the extra parsley for later spicing.  I love how the Proteak cutting boards make all of my chopping look professional.

Sauteing up the veggies to mix with the rice.

I love cooking anything with red pepper to spice up the color.

My least favorite part, mixing the rice with the meat.

After this you mix everything together, stir in some spice, throw it in a covered casserole dish and stick it in the oven for two hours on 325.

Here it is!  The final product.  Although it would be nice for some of the brilliant pepper colors to come through, the taste is unbeatable.

And for dessert………

The large edge grain board is the perfect size for rolling out pie crust, cookies, or other doughy projects.
